THEATRE OF THE ABSURD
(for Kevin)
Dear Mr. Barnum:
Please excuse Sisyphus. He is temporarily unable to fulfill his contractual obligations. I fear he is quite unwell.....
Sneering demons who'd look on and laugh,
Simpering imps who'd pat him on the back,
Half-hearted roars--tepid applause
Well-meaning patrons moved only by flaws---
Sisyphus phoned in sick.
Tired of the nothing--tents up tents down,
The sadness of peg-holes left in the ground,
A ton-and-a-half of elephant shit
High expectations--always unmet---
Sisyphus phoned in sick.

My ear wants to hear this:
Sneering demons look on and laugh,
Jeering imps patting his back,
Half-hearted roars--tepid applause
Well-meaning patrons moved only by flaws---
Sisyphus phoned in sick.
Tired of nothing--tents up tents down,
The sadness of pegleg-holes-in-the-ground,
A ton-and-a-half of elephant shit
High expectations--forever unmet---
Sisyphus phoned in sick.
You're right about the who'd...been messing with that one.
I think I prefer
Sneering demons look and and laugh
Jeering imps pat him on the back
The reason I haven't removed the who'd is the question why...what was final straw in his dealings with absurdity? Withouth who'd, the sense is a little different.
or without "who'd"
My ear wants to hear things tumbling down.
Hence, 'peg-leg-holes-in-the-ground' and gerunds.
